Reno

Warm up the neon and dust off the bedspreads. Nada Dada Motel officially opens for business, June 18 - 21, 2009, with live performances, an array of visual arts, and a world of unplanned mayhem. Dis-organized by a group of self-proclaimed misfits, the Nada Dada Motel is the third annual gathering of artists from across the country who set up shop across three floors of the iconic El Cortez Motel, downtown Reno at 2nd and Arlington, for an entire weekend of exhibition, interaction and philanthropy. With more than 100 artists expected this year, the event spills over into the nearby Town House Motor Lodge and The Palladio residential tower. From just 10 rooms in 2007 to more than three full floors in 2009, Nada Dada Motel is a visual and experiential treat for art lovers as individual artists exhibit their photography, painting, sculpture, music, video, performance art and more within the walls of a classic Reno motel room. From "green art" by the infamous Mud People of Los Angeles to the photography of local Dianna Sion, every year since 2007 artists have taken advantage of this unique opportunity to display their best creations. Set in motion by six Reno artists the event has expanded to include creatives from across the West coast. Evenings at Nada Dada Motel promise to be as eventful as the afternoons with artist Jill Synder at the helm of the El Cortez' Trocadero Room presenting  "BeComing the Intrinsic Beloved", a cabaret-style performance piece featuring aerial and modern dance set to music each night, June 17 - 19, at 7 p.m..  Other Trocadero performances include Classic Happy Hour at 5 p.m. on June 18 with classical musicians performing never-before-heard pieces and Torch Song Karaoke at 5 p.m. on June 19 as participants sing love songs dressed in 40's garb.  Saturday, June 20, begins with a noon performance by classically trained singer Dixie Dahl, who often plays with Velvet Voices Underground in Reno, followed by an open mic-slash-instrumental.  At 5p.m. attendees are invited to witness "The Wedding of Jill and Dianna", a marriage of live and visual art between artists Snyder and Dianna Sion with the obvious accoutrements including a bridesmaid named Chad. Erotic poetry and bawdy limericks will follow the ceremony complete with the women of "Bohemian Burlesque!" at 8:30 p.m. Nada Dada Motel promotes philanthropy as local artist and cancer suvivor Brigette Stovall and Renown nurse Charlotte Kramer join forces to exhibit "Masks of Cancer", a display of special cancer masks collected by the pair and decorated by various artists. The masks are exhibited in room 306 with all proceeds benefiting the Reno Cancer Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families in times of need. El Cortez Motel manager Bob Beck donated the room in support of the Foundation's efforts.

Jill Marlene! Staging the Trocadero Room.

This year the Trocadero lounge inside the El Cortez Hotel will be alive with sound and sensuality.  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights Nadadada and Jill Marlene present the cabaret performance "Becoming the Intrinsic Beloved" which can be described as a multi media psychedelic  journey to self through innocence, experience, alienation and Illumination.  Music is live and ranges from Classical to sixties psych rock to folk to modern alternative.  Choreography by John Wade, Chelsea Teller Chen and Allison Prater draws from the circus and the sultans tents with modern, bellydance and aerial elements.  The already "Shining-like"  ambiance of the Trocadero Lounge will be adorned with the sensual twisted visions of Photographer Franz Szony and the performance will  be occurring in and around the audience as well as on the stage.  Musicians are local minstrels, rogues and jesters such as (Producer) Jill Marlene, Chris Nelson on Keys and Vocals,  Engineer and Master of the Cowbell 2tall Tom Gordon, "The Grups" Doyle Stewart, String Virtuosos Matt Linaman and Charlene Adzima, dave cherry blowing sax,  Punk prog afficcianado Gabriel Hilton,Grace Gatsby, and Chanteuses Jill Teachout and Dixie Dahl as well as a creative and beautiful band of dancers and acro yogis. We are waiting will take you on trip to the other worlds within.

The Trocadero Also hosts many other interesting and interactive events

Thursday,

June 18th

5 P.M. Classical Happy Hour.  There will be a complimentary/donations only bar for beverages as local classical musicians perform pieces that they were too scared to play at recitals for fear of damnation.

7 P.M., “BeComing the Intrinsic Beloved” takes the stage.

Friday,

June 19th

5 P.M. as well with Torch Song Karaoke.  Participants are asked to dress up in 40’s style and sing blue velvety love songs.

“BeComing the Intrinsic Beloved” follows at 7 PM.

10.P.M.You’ll be able to dance to the sounds of Army of Urchins (http://www.myspace.com/armyofurchins ) and Hop Scotch Whiskey (http://www.myspace.com/hopscotchwhisky) later that evening at 10 PM.

Saturday

June 20th

12:00 noon- a brown bag recital and performance  with Dixie Dahl, a classically trained singer who often performs with Velvet Voices Underground in Reno.  An open mic classical or otherwise, will follow and performers are asked to bring along recorded accompaniment.

5 PM.  audiences members will witness “The Wedding of Jill and Diana”, which is described as a marriage of live and visual art.

6 PM.  Chris Nelson, who recently sang with the Reno Philharmonic, will entertain at a Progressive Happy Hour.

8 P.M. The Sexy Sisters (AKA Ann Tracy and Cynthia Burdick) take the stage at 8 PM with a short performance of erotic poetry and bawdy limericks.

8:30  is “Bohemian Burlesque!”  A cover charge of  $10 will be collected at the door.

10 P.M.   Rounding out the evening will be DJ DAVID BOBZIEN!!! and dance music.

Although this is what is scheduled to date, there will most certainly be additional performances thrown in Dada-style.  Such as random bellydance perfromance by Allison Prater and Acro Yoga demos at the whim of the artistes... Check the board in the el-cortez lobby each day for additions to the sensory buffet that is the Trocadero this year. There will be a Trocadero Board in the lobby of the El Cortez that will announce the most recent additions.  All donations collected will be used to cover expenses at the Trocadero Room.

This is the third year for this DIY artists' movement, started by six artists and then expanded to create an opportunity for other artists from Reno and the surrounding region including Sacramento, to exhibit their work.  NadaDada adherents are from the disciplines of visual art, music, poetry, performance.
