Nada is for Sure in Life... Death and Taxes...
hope this is not a shock for you, readers...
Artists must pay sales tax when their art is sold.
This message is brought to you courtesy of the Department of Taxation, who will be sending their representatives and officers down to Nada Motel...a.k.a. Hotel El Cortez (the 2nd & 3rd floors) and also the Town House Motorlodge, both at 2nd & Arlington, DOWNTOWN RENO. Anyway, they tell me that this will happen tomorrow, Thursday, the 26th of June, (Nada Motel's opening day) with most rooms opening around noonish.
Since, hopefully, participating artists already know this tax fact, the excitement and anticipation of the Department of Taxation's visit will end anticlimactically. Some artists have work for sale, these are the ones with a sales tax permit; some do not, these are exhibiting artists with nothing for sale–nada.
Either way, you'll enjoy visiting our rooms, won't you? It's all free, it's all put on by artists and you're invited.
by the way tune in to "Insight" on KXJZ, Sacramento's Capital Public Radio 90.5 around 2:20, you'll hear interviewed, me, Bob the manager at the Cortez and Ann Tracy, artist from Sacramento. We'll be talking about.. what else.. so tune in, in fact, come to Nada Motel and listen to the show there, I'll be phoning in from my room, 203 at the Town House Motorlodge. Hopefully the tax man doesn't come at the same time!
Oh and get Thursday's Reno News & Review, Nada's all over it!

I propose a new tagline for Nada Motel:
"We won't bite you, hell, we don't even wanna' sell you anything (unless we have a sales tax permit, that is..)"

Day 2
A bit rough today... I spent three hours driving all over town looking for "moulding hooks". these hook over crown moulding and allow you to hang a picture without putting a nail in the wall.
New today:
Nino's making a film in his room.
Elaine Parks has some really cool ceramics. they look like soft pillows, but you know they are really hard.
Dusty Hartman is back from Washington state sporting a red mohawk.
Someone named Tiffany has an under construction sign on her door.
I said hi to Trelane but dont know exactly what she has planned.

The Sorg Report
Yes, the ball is rolling, connections being made, synapses firing and NADA MOTEL is under way, well the set up so far. Cortez is fulla' spunky kickers already and
Last night was a lot of fun, quite a few artists milling around, we've got a few rooms over at the Town House, well we ended up with like 10 so far. They're pretty nice rooms, and big! More rooms available there–last minute drop ins are welcome–323-1821, Cynthia's the manager but they all know us.
We're having a Nada LouOuw(how the hell do ya spell that?) at the TH poolside. Now before you think into it too much...i.e. where's my bathing suit?... drop by there and see the pool.. anyway, it's fire spinners on tap, can't tell ya when this'll be happening, we're going with a more unplanned approach this year...wingin' it... And more events over there as well, you'll just have to be surprised.
I'm installing art (room 203) in my room today as are the others, mairin (I'm spelling her name wrong too) will be painting in her room, 204 all week, which is perfect because she's got a room with carpet ripped out. Dusty Hartman–mohawk photographer–is in 108, Cindy Gunn and Paula are in.... another room, and the Vegas artists as well...Other rooms are filled there as well... I'm making posters for the Cortez and TownHouse to direct people to the right rooms, it won't be confusing. It will be clearly marked which rooms are participating.
At the Cortez, Amy's getting the Nada Lounge ready to serve you drinks in 201; there's a barnyard in 207–YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS "room" from Kai and Ned and art is flowing in others, as we speak.
Downstairs the "Cock Fight Club" is ready to go, well.... not ready but it will be, with sumo style fighting and bands with the "shake yer tail feathers" dance Sat. night, fighting matches Friday night.
Article came out in RGJ last friday and this Thursday and Arts & Culture story in RNR opening day. also on Thursday, 10am I think, Sacramento NPR is interviewing me, plus Bob the manager of the Cortez and Ann Tracy, artist from Sac on the air.
Spread the word, it's the party of the year, and YES it's all about the art!

first day... I'm in 314
I showed up about 10:30 am and got my keys... room 314. It looked a bit small at first but would do. I have conduit and moulding around the ceiling to hang pictures from. East facing so it wont get too hot. Bathroom actually pretty nice, I like the tile work. Still, I'm not going near the wrapped TP, got quite a scare last year.
Stephanie Hogen and Elaine Jason were in 212 setting up. An installation of some sort with tree branches and neon and Stephanie's bringing in photos tomorrow.
Back in the lobby ran into Diana. She introduced me to Bob, I think he's the manager or owner of the El Cortez. He was great, remembered my name from last year and said he put me in a bigger room. I mentioned that it seemed smaller than last year but it would be fine. Later, I felt bad about complaining so when I saw him again I thanked him for remembering me and said the room was great. Now I realize, he gave me a really NICE room, as in clean and cool.
Nick Higman showed up at 11 to shoot photos for the Reno News and Review. He started with Diana so I ran home to pick up some prints to hang up. Nick took a few shots in my room. Thew will be in RN&R this Thursday.
Other people I ran into... Still learning names, sorry.
Zach, April, Criag Smires, Nick? - setting up paintings and wire sculptures on 2nd floor 210?
Ned and two others, 2nd floor - 2 rooms, one converted into a shack with a wood stove and a hay bale, other with bird things
I was there from 3-6. hanging photos and trying to get them straight. Sonia came around 5pm and quickly got immersed in the Cable TV. Some show on Discovery about people who sign up to be robbed by ex-burglars who set up video cameras in the house and wait until you are not home and leave all the doors unlocked and the keys in the car and the Louis Vitton bags in the closet next to the dresser filled with all the lingerie and jewelry. Whatever...

Finally, saw the Sorgs... Amy is hosting the Nada Lounge. They were off in a corner room on floor 2. She didn't get such a nice room but will make it wonderful I'm sure...
